Do Indians deserve clean and accessible public restrooms?
I am writing this article based on personal experience. Recently I was on a holiday trip with my family. Our family is kinda big we had to book a 20 seater van for the trip. It was an amazing experience as usual. My grandma accompanied us in our trip. She is in her 70s with severe knee issues. During our return journey she wanted to use restroom, but she kept it to herself knowing it would take an hour to find one. After an hour or so she informed it to my sister. My sister asked me to find a restroom. I am a healthy person in late 20s traveled to different countries. Even though I can navigate unknown places easily, I had to ask 3 locals to locate nearest public restroom.
My grandma had to walk a kilometer with my hand support. After reaching the public restroom, we had to pay 2 rupees for using the restroom. The lady collecting money was rude and unprofessional. She wasn’t allowing women to use restroom if they don’t provide exact change. Most of them were ok giving up the remaining money owed to them to answer nature’s call. My grandma couldn’t have made it to the restroom on her own.
On top of everything, the public restroom wasn’t in a sanitary condition. Kids and elderly could get infection easily. I am sure most of the people are disgusted to enter public restrooms. I honestly feel Indian/State government should take steps to make clean restrooms accessible to public. There is no concept of public rest stops in Indian highways. Public have to pay for unsanitary restrooms. I see Indians getting angry for trivial/unnecessary things. But people are ready to tolerate lack of basic necessity like restrooms (Please don’t get me started on schools and education system). Politicians and government officers should try to make real changes rather than lip service and instigating divide among people.
